Medical Xpress wrote an article on this particular matter and it spoke about whole-brain radiotherapy. For those who are not in the know, this is one of the common methods of therapies in terms of this type of cancer but I am not sure if it is that effective. The reason that I say this is because, in large doses, WBRT could actually lead to cognitive deficiencies in patients. As you can imagine, there is work being done in order to find alternate methods with other various components put into place.
Deborah Watkins-Burner - who works within the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing - was referred to in the article. Researchers have been able to go about much more unique procedures. The group she put together has been able to work with 508 eligible WBRT patients. While in their first week of WBRT, these patients were given either a placebo or Memantine. One can only imagine that results will be able to show themselves before long but I don't know if individuals understood just how strong they would be.
It seems as though authorities the likes of Voices against Brain Cancer will be able to tell you about the various findings in this particular field. The report went into detail about how cognitive function was much better amongst the patients following this procedure. This alone makes such findings very worthwhile in the field of cancer awareness. In addition, it can only help research stand that much stronger than it would have been able to before, which is something that anyone involved in this field strives for.
It's interesting because typically you would not think that certain drugs would be able to work as well as you might have imagined. After all, some of the most common methods are put to use time and time again, so the mind registers them as the best that there could be. However, researchers understand that there are greater possibilities out there, so they should be recognized as well. More importantly than that, though, they should be ones that are incorporated, being put to use in the long term.
