Understanding Dandy Walker Malformation

By Jack Morgan

A number of medical conditions exist today, most of which are not even known to most persons. One of such conditions is dandy walker malformation. A good number of those who know it have heard it being called Dandy-Walker Syndrome. It is simply a faulty structure in the congenital brain. This anomaly involves the cerebellum and the spaces of fluid that surround it.

This malformation takes place during the development of the embryo. Apart from the affecting the cerebellum, the malformation affects the 4th ventricle. Effect on the 4th ventricle is seen when this part enlarges. The flow of fluid in the 4th ventricle may also be blocked in the process.

The other features of Dandy Walker Malformation are the absence of the area the brain area which should be between the cerebellar hemispheres. There is formation of cyst near the lowest part of the skull. There is also an enlargement of the small channel that allows fluid to flow freely between the lower and upper of the spinal cord and the brain.

This malformation can develop unnoticed or in a dramatic way. The early stages symptoms of this syndrome in infants include progressive enlargement of the skull plus slow motor development. There is increased intracranial pressure in older children. The other symptoms in older children include signs of cerebellar dysfunction, vomiting, poor muscle coordination, increased head circumference, jerky eye movements, bulging of the back of the skull and abnormal breathing patterns.

Unlike any other conditions, dandy walker malformation affects children in a unique way. Some children still manage to have normal cognition even with the syndrome. Sadly for others, they never achieve full intellectual development despite early detection of the condition and draining off excess fluid. How long one survives will depend on the severity of their condition. However, when the defects are multiple in a person, they will have a short life span.

Prognosis of this disease is the variable intellectual development. There are some children who are able to to have a normal cognition while there are those that never achieve this feat even if the excess liquid is drained off earlier enough in the correct procedure. The severity of the disease and all the associated malformations determine the longevity. If the congenital defects are multiple then they may lead to a shorter lifespan of the patients.

Dandy walker malformation is often linked to the disorder in the central nervous system or the brain. They include lack of the corpus callosum, malformations of the limbs, toes, fingers, heart and face among others. Ultrasound technology has made prenatal diagnosis a possibility. Therefore, it is vital that parents take prenatal clinics seriously to enable detection of such conditions.

There is a lot of research that is being conducted by various organizations. This research is aimed at developing a deeper understanding of the way in which the brain functions with its associated malformations, whereby Dandy Walker Malformation is among the conditions that are being studied. The knowledge which is got from such different research offers a wide area of treatment and prevention of this syndrome and many other disorders.
